Der Canadische Kolonist was a German language newspaper that was established in Stratford in 1864. The newspaper was first owned by Jakob Teuscher, but in 1877 it became the property of J. H. Schmidt who continued to run the newspaper until 1906. Der Canadische Kolonist had subtsantial support from the Germans especially those living in the area of Stratford, Ontario. The newspaper was a vigorous newspaper that was mainly devoted to news. However, humour, prose, poetry, and other useful items of every variety could also be found in the newspaper.
