Our revisions to the Orlando interface continue apace, and we’re at work on an exciting new task: the collection of images for author entries, some shared with permission and others in the public domain. These include author portraits along with images of their texts and places associated with their lives and bodies of work.
We invite you to participate in our visual treasure hunt.
As our research team carries out this work, we hope to hear from members of our community who wish to share image files. We will publish attributions for all images and thank all contributors to this campaign on our Credits page.
Sharing images We hope that most images will be as widely-available as possible.
If you’d like to contribute an image that is your property or another’s property AND is generally available for legal use, we’d love to see it uploaded with a license for sharing to Wikimedia Commons, to address the well-known gender bias in the Wikipedia ecology and promote women’s writing across the web. (Information about the scope of the Commons is here, and you can read here about the educational and freely licensed images it accepts.)
However, we also welcome images for use in Orlando’s own repository and the textbase, ideally still with a license for sharing broadly but, if need be, closed to all but Orlando subscribers.
If you’d like to let us know about an image whose availability is uncertain, we’d love to hear from you too.

Image files We’re collecting files in JPEG, PNG, or TIFF formats; at least 700×400 pixels; and at least 72 dpi.
Exciting stuff: authors in the textbase We’re collecting images of and related to all authors listed in this multi-tabbed spreadsheet. We’re interested not just in portraits but in any image, including personal photographs, that document a location or event in a woman writers’ life. Please note that we’re keen to collect images for all authors in the full list, but have prioritized those associated with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors in Orlando.
