Orlando’s Research at the Intersections of Gender

Our Literary Director, Katherine Binhammer, is participating in “Working the Intersections of Gender,” the inaugural conference of Intersections of Gender, a cross-disciplinary hub comprising one of the University of Alberta’s signature areas of research. In “Computing Sexual Difference in Digital Literary History: The Orlando Project and Intersectionality,” Binhammer will discuss “how Orlando approached the question of intersectionality in the textbase with its Cultural Formation tag, an encoding strategy that foregrounds women writers’ intersectional identities.” As she explains, “Asking what knowledge is produced by encoding cultural formation foregrounds the problem endemic to data-based digital methods of identifying to make visible while at the same time refusing to reify identity categories and turn humans into metrics.” Read more about the conference here.
