Description
Le Métis was a newspaper published weekly in French from 1871 to 1881. Its first issue appeared on May 27, 1871 in St. Boniface. The newspaper was founded by Joseph Royal who "was an ardent defender of French language rights and committed to the principle of Canadian cultural duality. Especially those of the 10,000 people of mixed blood." (source: https://timemachine.siamandas.com/PAGES/more%20stories/LE_METIS.htm). In its ten years of existence it had seven locations and three different owners. The newspaper received federal and provincial financial support which were discontinued in 1879.

The newspaper contained articles about federal and provincial government notices on land and other legal matters. Moreover, it focused on news from France and Quebec. Le Métis payed particular attention to the importance of education and it served as a forum of debate about the Riel question and the amnesty issue and Métis land rights.

In 1872, the offices and press of Le Métis were ransacked and destroyed causing $8,000 in damages. It took the newspaper 10 weeks to get back into production.
