Wapikoni Mobile was co-founded in 2003 by Manon Barbeau, the Council of the Atikamekw Nation Youth Council and the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, with the support of the Assembly of First Nations and the collaboration of the National Film Board of Canada. Wapikoni Mobile is committed to broadcasting films and various public awareness issues facing First Nations; enhancing a rich culture; combating isolation and suicide among First Nations youth while developing artistic, technical, social, and professional skills; as well as building bridges and cultural exchanges between First Nations and non-Indigenous people.

The mobile studios have visited over a hundred Indigenous communities in Canada and abroad. They feature over 1,295 films and 817 musical recordings. Wapikoni Mobile has received numerous awards and mentions among which 2014 Intercultural Innovation Award from the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the BMW Group, the 2011 Rights and Freedoms Prize, the Honorable Mention Award at Plural +, a festival organized by UNAOC and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the 28th Grand Prize of the Montreal Council of Arts, film category.
