Abstract: Johann Tobber from Dapp, north of Westlock, founded a “working group” in this settlement in 1933. He gave a speech, reprinted in the Courier, in which he extolled National Socialism as a weltanschauung and showed its practical application for the Germans in Dapp and elsewhere. He related the Canadian soil to the German-Canadian character: In his view, German-Canadians were tougher, simpler (einfacher), and less complex than the Germans in Germany. German-Canadians had to fight for their culture. They could enrich the world-wide German Volksgemeinschaft by creating a German-Canadian identity and culture (see also: Deutsche Zeitung für Canada, July 14, 1937, p. 7)

Article Title: Viewegar, Hugo
Newspaper Name: Edmonton Journal
Date of Publication: July 9, 2000
Page(s): A.1.FRO
Abstract: Few Albertans have heard of Hugo Viewegar, but experts say the photos he snapped of Edmonton - in full colour - nearly 100 years ago are priceless works of art and history. He shot the only known colour photos of a Royal North West Mounted Police trooper in one of the first musical rides, and he captured Indian cast members of Buffalo Bill Cody's famed Wild West show back in 1914. Viewegar shot autochromes, the earliest and rarest form of colour photography, using glass plates and dyed potato starch for film. The format never caught on and vanished after the First World War. For people accustomed to glimpsing the past in grainy black and white or sepia-toned photos, Viewegar's images unveil a new world of pastel hues, razor-sharp details and eye-popping colour. But for their beauty, autochromes are exceedingly rare. Only a few hundred survive in the world. - Viewegar was born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1873, the eldest son in a wealthy family of bankers. He pursued his love of photography by studying under Augusta and Louis Lumiere, French inventors of the autochrome process. He came to Canada in 1912 and opened an Edmonton photography studio in 1913 at 9 Northern Block in Edmonton (Henderson's Edmonton, Alberta city directory. Winnipeg/Vancouver: Henderson's Directories, Vol. 10, 1914). Viewegar was commissioned by the lieutenant-governor of Alberta to shoot official functions. He was placed under house arrest when Canada declared war on Germany, ending his career in 1914. Later he was allowed to settle on a remote homestead near Edgerton, Alta., where he died in poverty in 1930. At some time, the spelling of the Viewegar name changed to Vieweger.

Abstract: Mr. von Amerongen, President of the Edelweiss Club, commented at the German Days 1929 about the Germans and German culture in Canada that there was too much disunity, which showed need for an organization like the ‘Nationaler Verband der Deutsch-Canadier' to bring the Germans together (Der Herold, December 5, 1929, pp. 10, 15). He was also editor of the Courier in the 1920s. The German-Canadian Central Committee was founded in 1932 and Herr von Amerongen was elected President (Der Courier und der Herold, December 14, 1932, p. 5). Article Title: von Hammerstein, Alfred
Newspaper Name: Calgary Herald
Date of Publication: July 8, 1918
Page(s): 12
Abstract: Alfred von Hammerstein ([ca.1870]-1941) was born in Germany, and as a young man embarked on a military career. In 1895 he gave this up and moved to New York. In 1898 he headed for the Klondike gold rush via Edmonton, but turned back before reaching the Yukon. Instead, he joined another adventurer and traveled down the Athabasca River to Fort McMurray. Here he first encountered the Athabasca Tar Sands, which he later attempted to develop. Between 1898 and 1907 he ran German language newspapers in Edmonton and Winnipeg. Among other ventures he founded the Alberta Herold in Edmonton in 1903, which he later sold to Gustav Körmann. He became highly successful as a coal mining developer (“German Development Company”) between 1906, the year of his arrival in Canada, and 1914. In 1907 he took a drilling crew to Fort McMurray and spent the next five summers drilling. He was unsuccessful in finding a way to extract the oil from the sand, yet he raised millions, and with this money founded the Athabasca Oil and Asphalt Co. in Winnipeg in 1909. In the 1909 elections, von Hammerstein - a great supporter of German culture in the province since 1897 - was a candidate for Athabasca, but withdrew his name two days before the elections. At the outset of the War, von Hammerstein was an outspoken defender of the Germans in Canada and protested the measures imposed on the enemy aliens. He also founded the Canada First Movement which advocated an isolationist policy. In 1918, the $4,000,000 Brazeau coal field owned by Martin Nordegg and his “Deutsches Canada Syndikat” was taken over by the Ministry of Finance. Von Hammerstein visited Alberta several times in the 1930s and died in St. Albert in 1941. Nordegg Crescent in Calgary is named after him (Donna Mae Humber, ed., What's in a name? Vol. 1. Calgary: Detselig Enterprises, 1995, p. 122.).
