Abstract: Author Jacqueline Baker makes her home today on an acreage an hour west of Jasper in the shadowed junction of three towering mountain ranges, but she grew up in the stark expanse of the Sand Hills area of southwestern Saskatchewan. It is against that vast canvas that Baker set her 2003 story collection, 'A Hard Witching', and that same prairie backdrop frames her first novel, 'The Horseman's Graves', which has just been released. Article Title: The Mennonite immigrant who could move anything
Newspaper Name: Albertaner
Date of Publication: June 1, 2007
Page(s): 8
Abstract: On May 5, 2007, the Canadian film premiere of "Pete: Moving Man Made Mountains" was held in Provost, Alberta. The event was a motion picture celebration of Pete Friesen's life and achievements. Peter D. Friesen was born in 1922 in Ukraine and immigrated as an infant, with his Mennonite family, to Rosenheim, Alberta. A colony of Mennonites settled there in 1924, partly because it was a German-speaking community. However, because of the Great Depression and the "Dustbowl", the family moved to Glenbush, Saskatchewan in 1934 and then to Yarrow, British Columbia. Following service in World War II, Peter Friesen began a long and storied career in the structural moving industry. Beginning with small wood frame houses and progressing to the extremely complex move of the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 1999, Friesen became an engineering legend. He is an innovator who has developed machinery, engineering methods and computer programs, all still widely used in the industry. While relocating approximately 5,000 buildings in his lifelong career he has helped preserve some of America's most treasured historic structures. Friesen has received many awards and prizes for his work.
