Note that the non-believer (etic perspective) may attribute reality only to the psychic and social systems, regarding the "cosmic" system as an individual or collective representation of the metaphysical.  However it is also possible to adopt, even contingently, an emic perspective as a means of explicating what language performance means for those who use it.
