This course aims to enable you to synthesize your own critical understanding of the field of ethnomusicology, including self-definitions, areal and disciplinary scope, key issues in its intellectual history, and theoretical or methodological trends. You will explore the ways in which ethnomusicology has drawn upon other fields of social science and humanities, especially musicology, music theory, anthropology, linguistics, psychology, sociology, economics, history, political science, literary studies, and others, applying a variety of theoretical paradigms to ethnomusicological data. The course also aims to introduce you to ethnomusicology's principal scholarly sources, exposing you to the wide array of ethnomusicological literature, and pausing to consider landmark works in some depth. Finally, this course encourages development of your own research directions in ethnomusicology, through preparation of an original research proposal.
