Singing and Dancing for Health

In this participatory action research project, an international collaboration between artists, academics, public health experts, and community members, we aim to create, evaluate, and refine effective music and dance interventions for public health education and promotion in the developing world. In particular, we seek to collaboratively develop and assess the impact of participatory "dance dramas" (comprising music, song, dance, poetry, drama, and comedy in traditional idioms, but carrying community health messaging) for public health promotion in northern Ghana, that country's most underdeveloped area, partnering with a Ghanaian performing arts/education NGO experienced in applications of music and dance to development projects. Sustainability is enabled through the establishment of local community-based performance groups, with the intention to enable this new repertoire to enter the local oral tradition.

Thus far, our focus is two critical health care issues: sanitation/cholera and malaria. We are also seeking funding to add additional dance dramas centered on Ebola awareness, Maternal and Neonatal Health, and Mental Health.

The Department of Music, Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, and folkwaysAlive! support five academic degree programs within which a specialization in ethnomusicology and world music is possible:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA), major or minor in music
  • BA Honours in music
  • Embedded Certificate in World Sound Arts (can be added to any bachelor degree program across the University)
  • Bachelor of Music (BMus), world music route (now suspended)
  • MA in Music, with concentration in ethnomusicology
  • PhD in Music, with concentration in ethnomusicology

Academic schedule 2016-17

For prospective students

Please see the following sections also to learn about our programs.

For current students

Undergraduate programs relevant to ethnomusicology

Graduate programs relevant to ethnomusicology

Note that graduate students begin with an interim advisor who serves to provide general mentorship and guidance on course and research related matters. By the end of the first year the program supervisor (or advisor, for the MA course-based route) must be selected, along with the supervisory committee (comprising two additional faculty members) for doctoral students. See the FGSR graduate program manual for more details on supervision.

  • Ethics:

NB: Please note that all graduate students must complete the Ethics training for Music graduate students, as well as the Professional Development requirement.

    • Prior to conducting research you may be required to receive University of Alberta Research Ethics Board approval.

Check the Arts, Science, and Law Research Ethics Board web site for information and forms.
