Summary of the BA in Music

The BA requires 120 credits. You must complete requirements for the Core, as well as for a Major, and a Minor subject. Here are the links explaining BA requirements for the Music Major:

BA Core requirements & BA Music major and minor requirements

NB: Errata in the 2004-5 Calendar:

  • Music 365, 465, 466, 467, 468, 469 all count towards the Ethnomusicology requirement.
  • None of the ethnomusicology courses count towards the Music History requirement (i.e. 467 and 468 do not count here)
  • Music 170 no longer exists. The Note should therefore recommend 155 and 156 only.

If you do not know how to read music, you must take Music 100 (Rudiments). A placement exam is available in the Music Library to help determine whether you need this course or not. Music 102, 281, 282 are advised for all Music Majors, but not absolutely required. If you are transferring from another university, see staff in the Faculty of Arts office (6th floor Humanities building) in order to determine transfer credits which will be applied towards the BA in Music.

For the course listings themselves, see Bear Tracks. Note that not all courses are offered every year! For courses requiring “consent” see the course instructor (or contact the Music Department Office).
