Arab music regions
There are probably countless ways to divide the Arab world into different music spheres, and the spheres of say popular, classical and folk music are often not in alignment. That being said there are some important regions which can be delineated:
- Eastern Mediterranean This includes the modern countries of Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria as well as Northern Egypt and Eastern Iraq.
- Central Iraq Specifically the section around Baghdad
- Northern Iraq/Syria Areas with large Kurdish populations
- The Gulf Which can probably be divided into dessert and sea traditions
- Yemen Sana’a and Hadramout tends to be a fairly distinct musical region, whereas the coast tends to be much closer to the Gulf
- Central North Africa Western Egypt and Libya
