This week we will be joined for lunch by a very special guest all the way from Ghana, West Africa, the legendary African guitarist, Koo Nimo.
Koo Nimo, palm-wine guitarist, poet, song-writer, singer, and leading figure in the history of African music, is coming to Edmonton for a series of workshops, lectures and performances. Originally from Kumasi in central Ghana, Koo Nimo is a pioneer in the traditional acoustic guitar music known as “palm-wine.” With a career that spans over six decades he continues to perform and teach in Ghana and internationally. He has been a visiting artist at a number of universities, including Harvard, University of Michigan, and the University of Washington and has performed at festivals throughout Europe and North America. His palm-wine acoustic guitar style is central to the main roots of the popular highlife music of Ghana, one of Africa’s most popular genres that emerged from Ghana and Nigeria in the 1950’s. In past years Nimo also served as President of the musicians union of Ghana, Chairman of the copyright society of Ghana, member of the education commission of Ghana, and lecturer on guitar at the University of Cape Coast. He has received several awards from the government of Ghana, for his contributions to traditional culture and music, including the Konkoma Award in 1997.

folkwaysAlive! presents Koo Nimo, Ghanaian musician, teacher and administrator. A leading folk musician of Palm wine or Highlife music, Nimo will be working with the World Music Ensembles at the University before presenting this public concert at Muttart Hall at the Alberta College campus of Grant MacEwan University.
