Program

Please note that solos preceding songs must perforce be kept very (very) short, due to time constraints - really just a brief prelude, a chance for the audience to have a taste of a particular instrument or improvisatory style, rather than a separate program piece. For the same reason, soloists please move into place as soon as possible after the previous song, without waiting for applause to subside. Thank you for your cooperation!

Performance tips:

  • percussion: please use a light touch! diversify the instruments! keep up the tempo!
  • singers: sing out! keep up the pitch!
  • instruments: listen carefully! watch those microtones!
  • everyone: listen, watch, smile, enjoy!
  • Performance changes: We won't perform the last verse on either Getma Getma Gal, or Hibbina.

Set list:

  • Bilafrah (Lebanese) G Hijaz. Full ensemble with male and female chorus, no solos. Remember first verse is female, second is male, chorus is for everyone.
  • Very short violin taqsim - solos by Ari (Hijaz G) and Nadir (Nahawand C).
  • Ya Mahla al-Fusha (Syrian) C Nawa Athar/minor. Instrumental ensemble, chorus, and vocal solo by Rana.
  • Very short tar/vocal solo intro then Getma getma gal (Azerbaijani) G minor. Instrumental ensemble, chorus and vocal solo by Farid. Note: we'll sing only 2 verses, not 3.
  • Very short tonbak solo demonstrating some of the instrument's many timbres, then Shoore Aasheghaaneh (Persian) G minor. Instrumental ensemble, chorus and vocal solo by Kioumars.
  • Mizmor Laila (Israeli-Yemeni) Bb minor.
  • Very short oud solo - Abdel Hadi (Hijaz D), then Hibbina[1](Egyptian-Syrian) D Hijaz. Instrumental ensemble, chorus and vocal solo by Tony, dancing by Chris. Note: we'll skip the final verse/refrain.
  • Longa Kurdili Hijaz Kar(Turkish) D Kurdili Hijaz Kar. Instrumental ensemble, featuring clarinet (Mary).
