form

Non-metric section:

(percussion can supply some sound effects, but there's no regular beat)

Chord changes are cued by Ben..

  1. chord progression (G-, C-, Eb, D) 2x (instrumental; first time simple, second time more improv)
  2. chord progression 2x (this time accompanying solo voice: verse 1)
  3. chord progression 1x (instrumental); end on D

Metric section:

(Steven introduces wahda; from now on chord changes are cued by percussion)

  1. chord progression 1x instrumental (lots of improv)
  2. chord progression 2x w/ vocals (chorus; verse 2; instruments fill w/ lawazim)
  3. chord progression 1x instrumental (lots of improv)

(Steven introduces masmudi)

Repeat the following three times, first very soft, then medium, then very loud.

  1. chord progression (four times as fast as before) repeated 4 times (8x masmudi), accompanying vocal melody (verse 3=Aramaic) in four phrases (each phrase is two bars of masmudi; please listen to get these melodies and their harmonies). Also please remember which upper harmony part you have decided to take!
  2. final bar of masmudi: instrumental only (instruments have a standard melody to play here).

notes:

  1. initial section should not be too long; keep the pacing lively (otherwise the song can easily run 7-8 minutes)
  2. keep wahda very even; not too slow
  3. be careful to follow wahda carefully when singing and for chord changes (2 cycles of wahda per chord)
  4. in the Aramaic section, please listen carefully and imitate the melodies, especially the second one of the four
  5. instruments fill in during vocal sections (lawazim), improvise freely during other sections
