Due Date: FRIDAY, DEC 10, 5 PM

Description

For the final project, create a musical composition, improvisation, or installation using a system you devise and create yourself using Max/MSP and/or other programming languages (subject to approval of the proposal). Each person will present this project in public in our final concert on Dec. 7. Third-party objects, externals, and plug-ins may be used, as long as they don't form the main function of your system.

Stipulations

Although the project is open in terms of what kind of music/sound piece you want to create, please ensure that the following guidelines are followed:

  • The performance should be five minutes or less in overall length
  • Your project must be self-contained, and you must supply any hardware items you wish to integrate unless otherwise arranged in advance

Presentation Format

Your project should be presented in one of the following formats:

  • A solo performance (Dec. 7, 12 noon, Studio 2-7)
  • An interactive installation with demo
  • Other formats will need to be cleared ahead of time

Deliverables

In addition to the performance itself, which will be documented, please ensure that you turn in the following to me by the deadline:

  • All files associated with your system
  • A 2-3 page writeup, describing your patch, your process, your artistic intention, future directions, and any other relevant musings. This document should also explain all aspects of your system that may not be duplicated on my machine (i.e. particular hardware used, explanation of use of any third-party software items, etc.

Evaluation

The grading for the final exam will be based on the following factors:

  • Originality in programming and design (25%)
  • Cohesiveness and clarity in code design (documentation/use comments!) (25%)
  • Effective operation, control, and sound design (25%)
