I've been told since day 1 of studying Mandarin that you should start reading the second you start studying the language (I've even heard that it's close to impossible to start studying later in the game) and I still don't believe that's true. With all the touting of acquiring second languages the way you acquired your first,mandarin Chinese I'm surprised this theory is so popular. I completely believe that a learner should be exposed when they first start (like Rosetta Stone can do), but I don't believe that formal study should start until a person is confident in communicating at least at a basic level. I tried about six months in and honestly, I found that the time I spent learning how to read slowed down my speaking/comprehension progress immensely. We'll see how my theory pans out...
