The Research Group ‘Philosophy of Science, Engineering and Technology’ (WTP) at the Institute for Technology Assessment and System Analysis (ITAS) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) invites applications for 2 Postdoctoral Research Positions
in Energy Ethics and/or Energy Epistemology

Job Description
The successful candidate will work on the epistemic and/or ethical aspects of the current energy transition with a focus on the specific role of the engineer or scientist. Hereby energy is understood broadly to include conversion, distribution, and waste as well as the different sectors such as electricity, heat, and mobility. The prospective candidate’s research may focus on (although not restricted to) one or more of the following areas:

• ethical and/or epistemic aspects of energy transition, modeling and/or energy futures
• responsibilities of engineers and scientists
• sustainable and responsible use of energy
• global ethical obligations
• philosophical foundations of sustainability
• risk ethics applied to various aspects of energy supply and demand
• Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) or Value Sensitive Design related to the energy system

We are looking for a candidate who is interested and committed to interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary cooperation with engineers, policy makers and possibly the citizenry. Other responsibilities will include the search and application of third-party funding (grants) and a limited amount of teaching in the areas of philosophy of technology and science.

Personal Qualifications
The successful candidate is expected to hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in the field of philosophy or a closely related area and, ideally, several years of research experience. Moreover, the candidate should be interested in, and committed to interdisciplinary cooperation and is expected to possess a very good command of spoken and written English. German language skills are not required. Knowledge of the philosophy of technology is an advantage.

As soon as possible

Contract duration
Initially limited to 3 years, with the possibility of tenure
