"The Hottentots are great whistlers, and for this
purpose they draw their lips to one side and whistle
between their teeth.  Burchell asserts that dance music
is the most congenial to the Hottentots, " at least among
all the musicians who were at different times in his
service, none ever played any other kind, nor did Burchell
ever hear a Hottentot performing a slow air, or singing
to his own performance ". Many of the natives cannot
discriminate between a regular tune and a mere noise, and
Burchell's flute had no effect whatever upon them."
