Musical elements. Please be able to recognize the following:

  • Durub (or iqaʾat). Find notations and audio examples via the theory section of our MENAME website (bit.ly/mename), as well as on maqamworld.com (however be careful because that site names some of the rhythms differently, as indicated below).
    • Maqsum
    • Masmudi (maqamworld calls this Baladi)
    • Saʾidi
    • Wahda
    • Bamb (maqamworld calls this Fellahi ; note that they use "bamb" to name a different rhythm, so do not look up "bamb")
    • Malfuf
    • Ayyub (Zar)
    • Samaʾi Thaqil
  • Maqamat. Study the following maqamat by listening to excerpts of our songs here. Also listen extensively on maqamworld.com, where those who are familiar with music theory will also find very clear notations. Listening a lot will help you to internalize these modes.
    • Hijaz
    • Bayati
    • Kurd
    • Rast
    • Nahawand

For review materials listen frequently to examples on http://maqamworld.com and also listen to our songs, some of which have the maqam indicated (though be aware that sometimes they modulate from one maqam to another).

You'll find several theory links on http://bit.ly/mename for durub, including my own pdf charts, as well as this site and this one.

Songs. Please be ready to identify the following songs:

  • Ah ya Zayn (Nagwa Fuoud's film version)
  • Hibbina
  • Leylim Ley
  • Nassam alayna al-Hawa,
  • Ya Mirsal al-Marasil
  • Soltan-e Qalbha (King of Hearts)
  • Gana al-Hawa
  • Wahran

Information about these songs is listed on the wiki and available on Google Drive).

On the quiz, be prepared to say something (1-3 sentences) about them, including the following sorts of information (as available - not all information is available for every song or piece, so don't feel that you need to provide everything for each):

  • the title
  • the names of the composer and lyricist (if known)
  • the singer with whom the piece is associated (if known)
  • the name of the film in which the song appears
  • the approximate date of composition/performance
  • what the song is about (if translation is given)
  • the maqam and darb (if identified)
  • the genre (type of music, if known)
  • the source culture, ethnicity, language, or country/region
  • any other associated facts or history you may recall

During the quiz I will play a short excerpt from a recording; you will provide as much of the above (or other) information as you can, in approximately 1-3 sentences. You don't have to know anything about these songs that hasn't come up through this class (so don't go researching); there isn't always a definite "right" answer; and you don't have to provide every detail. I'm just looking to see what information you can provide.
