Respond to the following:

  • Ahlan wa sahlan!

Geography: navigating the MENA region!

Imagine that you are driving an off-road vehicle with plenty of gasoline and food. Starting in Casablanca, you want to drive all the way to Tehran (don’t worry about visas, or where roads go - you can take any path!). You also want to visit certain cities along the route. List the countries you’ll pass through during your journey in order, giving the principal language for each in parentheses. Here are the cities you’ll visit on your trip:

  • Casablanca (start)
  • Algiers
  • Tunis
  • Tripoli
  • Cairo
  • Jerusalem
  • Amman
  • Damascus
  • Beirut
  • Istanbul
  • Baghdad
  • Tehran (end)

Quick identifications. Define terms in a single phrase (you may use notation for the rhythms. They all come from class presentations or readings. If you don’t have notes from class, check online resources from bit.ly/mename: for the durub see bit.ly/durub. Also see maqamworld.com for names of instruments, maqamat, and durub)

I’ll select just a few from this list, but be sure you can identify them all.

  • darb (plural durub)
  • iqaʿ (plural iqaʿat)
  • dum and tek
