FGSR's Professional Development requirement

Summary:

We only have three flexible requirements for PD credit:

  1. Comprises formal training and includes active learning, with an assessment component (self-assessment, reflection, quiz, write-pair-share, evidence of knowledge application)
  2. Falls outside of courses, research methods training, capstone project, thesis or equivalent, and required practicum
  3. Supports the career goals and/or seven skills/competencies identified in the individual development plan

There is also the possibility for some PD hours to count if a student is part of a University Sanctioned Committee (see full info and the form here).

Some nitty-gritty details:

Who determines what counts?

  1. Any PD from Campus Bridge is automatically approved as it is FGSR's idea of PD.
  2. Some Departments have approved pro-seminars (we don't have any in Music at the moment).
  3. Some students may be involved in other PD activities, as approved by the Supervisor.

How are the hours counted?

  1. Student tracks PD.
  2. The PD completion form outlining the 8 hours is signed by student and supervisor and submitted to the Grad Advisor for the student file.
  3. Grad Advisors sign off on the final form as it is for department records only and not submitted to FGSR.

If you have questions about whether a particular activity counts or not, please contact your supervisor first of all.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for your question! The FGSR only has three requirements for PD credit:

  • Comprises of formal training and include active learning, with an assessment component (self-assessment, reflection, quiz, write-pair-share, evidence of knowledge application)
  • Falls outside of research methods training, capstone project, thesis or equivalent, and required practicum
  • Supports the career goals and/or seven skills/competencies identified in the individual development plan

We say that the department makes the final call because a few have decided to host their own PD sessions internally (as long as they still meet the three objectives listed above).

... [a] training course could very much fit! Just ensure the students gets proof of attendance/completion (either in an email, a declaration of attendance form, or certificate).

Our website is slow to be updated (we are currently short-staffed), however we do have update sessions in campusBRIDGE (lots of PD)! Please direct students to that site. They can sign up for sessions there, plus it keeps a record for their proof of attendance.
