Music 472/572 Winter 2019 - Poster Presentations and Conference

Research Dissemination Events: Music for Global Human Development in Africa (Area Studies in Ethnomusicology: Africa; Music 472 (undergraduate level) and 582 (graduate level))

This seminar course centers on understanding music and other performance arts in Africa as constituting a sustainable, scaleable, highly effective social technology for maintaining vibrant, healthy, humanized societies: supporting cultural continuity, fostering social cohesion and civil society, multicultural and multigenerational connectivity, promoting social and economic justice, equality, gender equity, ecological balance, community health, education, and general wellbeing, and combating dehumanization, racism, and cultural miscommunication.

Each student has designed a human development project involving Africa and African music, resulting in a poster and talk. These will be presented at two events:

1) A concert on March 30, 8pm, in Convocation Hall. Posters will be on display during the West African Music Ensemble concert performance - featuring Ghanaian guest performers Mohammed Assau ([http:yhcg.net Youth Home Cultural Group], Tamale, Northern Region, Ghana) and Dr. Habib Iddrisu (University of Oregon), directed by course instructors Robert Kpogo and Wisdom Agorde.

2) A conference, extending over three days, April 2, 4, and 9, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm, in Studio 27, Fine Arts Building, UofA (see map).
