Audio

Hardware: ordinary point/shoot camera, or smart phone will record some audio (badly). A Zoom or equivalent solid state recorder is advisable. Recording direct to laptop is sometimes workable. You can also borrow a Minidisc recorder from the CCE. Consider also: microphones of various types, binaural recording, wireless, mixer, boom, stands, windscreen/dead cat....

Recorders

Types:

  • Zoom
  • Lavelier
  • Sound Devices 722
  • Tascam
  • Smartphone

Mics

  • Shotgun
  • Wide
  • Lavelier
  • Audio Technica AT-825 stereo mic.

Image

Hardware: ordinary point/shoot camera, or smart phone. Or: SLR, DSLR. Video cameras will typically take pictures too. You can also borrow my mechanical Pentax to explore all the parameters of still photography. Consider also: 3D photography, 360 degree photography...

The following are just possibilities - not recommendations....

  • DSLR
  • Point and shoot
  • camera (useful for VR applications) [1]
  • Light field
  • Wearable
  • Throwable
  • Drone-borne
  • 3D
  • GPS combo
  • Smartphone

Video

Hardware: ordinary point/shoot camera, or smart phone; Zoom or equivalent; consumer-level video camera. You can also borrow a Hi8 camera from the CCE. Most still cameras now take decent video, though the audio may suffer; a DSLR will shoot very sharp images. But length may be limited as compared to a dedicated video camera. Consider also: go pro, drone, tripod, monopod, microphone, steadicam, extra flash memory and batteries, lens cleaning, bag

Recorders

  • Camcorder
  • DSLR
  • Wearable (Go pro, e.g.)
  • 360
  • Livestreaming
  • 3D (double lens)
  • High speed video (good for understanding musical technique!)
  • Drone-borne
  • Smartphone
