Abstract: Harald Kukertz is a lawyer with Kukertz and Associates at #202, 8003-102 Street in Edmonton. He was born in Aachen and emigrated to Canada after graduating from high school. He studied law at the University of Alberta and was editor of the student newspaper Gateway for three years while at the University. Since 1980 he has had a lawyer's practice in Old Strathcona. He was president of the German-Canadian Business and Professional Association between 1995 and 1998. Kukertz has been very active in and on behalf of the community in Edmonton. After the German Consulate General in Edmonton was closed in 1995 he was an ardent supporter of Edmonton at least having an honourary consul an effort that bore fruit with the nomination of Fritz König in 1998. He also lobbied Air Canada to re-introduce direct flights between Edmonton and Frankfurt. Kukertz was also president of the McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association.

Abstract: Leo Buske was born in Tilsit in East Prussia in 1899 and worked on his parents' farm until he was drafted at the end of the First World War. He got married in 1927 and had his own farm in the Memelland. In 1939 he had to go to war again, but soon returned, fled to West Germany in 1945 and emigrated to Canada in 1949. At first he worked in the construction industry, but subsequently bought a farm near Edmonton. In 1959 Buske was one of the founders of the Deutsch-Kanadischer Konsumverein in Edmonton where members could shop at wholesale prices. Buske also helped build the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Edmonton at the beginning of the 1950s. He wrote poetry, especially about the sad fate of refugees and émigrés. In 1976, he died at the age of 77 years.
