| Makovyi Spas at the local church. This holiday is both a church holiday and a remnant of pre-Christian practices. Makovyi Spas is the first of three Spases. All have to do with the blessing of crops, specifically harvest. Makovyi Spas is the blessing of heads of the poppy plant, particularly the seed cases, which are full of seed. They are brought to church in dried form and included in bouquets, which contain flowers.
