The funeral of Hanna Petrivna Mateiko. The coffin in church, surrounded by candles inserted into a special frame made to support candles that is placed over the coffin. Candles seem to be a consistent part of the funeral but the actual use of candles varies. Here they are placed about the coffin. Elsewhere, they had to be given out to those present and held by them during the service. Another version was to give a set of 5-7 candles out, have these held by the relatives, then passed on to others and so forth. As the candles burned down, new sets of 5-7 were given out, at this point further along in the auditorium. The candle stubs were placed in the coffin and were supposed to light the way of the deceased as he or she traveled to his place in the land of the dead.
