Some people consolidated their holding into cooperatives. Here, land was bought up by entrepreneurs, whom the locals call "fermer" (which means farmer, but significantly, is a borrowed term and not the traditional word used to designate a farmer). Villagers said that they used to resent the fermer but now see working for him as a source of cash.
