| A view of one of the Khrushcheby. These are relatively cheap apartments built quickly at Khrushchev's request to accommodate the growing population. After the destruction of the Second World War, there was a serious housing shortage in general. With increasing urbanization, housing problems in cities were particularly acute and Khrushchev responded by ordering cheap, prefabricated houses built, mostly on the Left Bank of the Dnipro (Dnieper) River in Kyiv.
