A view of the Mother/Fatherland statue (Batkivshchyna Maty) erected to commemorate the soldiers killed in the Second World War. Most large cities have a statue of this sort. It is always female and represents the homeland. The one in Kyiv was particularly controversial because it was built near the Lavra, the sacred and much revered Cave Monastery, and also because it was built on what was considered the "bald" or witches' mountain of the area. There was protest that the sword of the statue extended higher than any of the cupolas of the Cave Monastery and the sword was apparently cut to quell public protest. Many urban legends that imply that the statue was cursed circulated during the late Soviet era.
