Gypsy children outside the Lavra. Because the Lavra is a holy place and people go there on pilgrimages, they are considered especially favorably disposed toward the poor and likely to give alms. Children beg there, as do cripples. Gypsy children also beg in the center of the city. Some people claim that guilds of beggars, like those of old, have been revived and that they gather to divide territory, assigning places where each will beg.
