This is a mixed village. Part of it is indigenous residents, and part is made up of people who resettled from the Chornobyl region. The ones here are from the village of Burlivka. Pictured in the photo is Kateryna Pavlivna Vashchenko, DOB 1922. She is one of the resettled people from Chornobyl. She was an informant on the life cycle and some of the yearly cycle, specifically the three "dedy" which come in November. These are days when the deceased ancestors are supposed to return. She also does babuvannia, which here means that she takes care of sick children and people in general. She has assorted scraps of papers with incantations. She calls these prayers. Because she sees these as prayers, she is quite willing recite them for us, to teach us how to pray properly and when.
