Baptism -- during the baptismal ceremony; the priest cuts the child's hair in the shape of a cross. Normally, this is done when the child is one year old. However, with the Soviet era, people stopped baptizing children shortly after their birth. Sometimes children were not baptized until they were as old as 6. Basically, parents and/or god parents waited for an opportune moment and opportune moments during the Soviet period were hard to find. Even now, many children are not baptized until they are somewhat older. When that happens, the cutting of the hair is done during baptism, as here.
