Dances

quetzal_line

Totonac men dressed in Quetzal costumes with spectacular headdresses called penaches.

Traditional dances are an important part of the Totonac cultural heritage and are performed  at important holidays and festivals such as the fiestas patronales in Patla and Chicontla. While once each village had men who learned and maintained these traditions, nowadays professional dancers are hired from nearby communities such as Coahuitlán to perform, usually with the sponsorship of the Catholic church.
