  • Hotpotatoes

Hot Potatoes is an application program which allows authors to create standard exercises (multiple choice, fill in blanks, matching, cloze, crossword, flashcards). The program takes the data entered by the author and combines that with template files to create sophisticated xhtml pages. Over 250,000 users have downloaded the software since its first public release in 1998.

  • Quandary

Quandary is an application program originally written to allow students in an ethics course to create decision trees to make more explicit inconsistencies in their logic. The author fills in blanks in the program and their data is combined with an html template to create a web page. The user makes a series of decisions, where each decision point presented depends on responses to previous decision points.

  • Transformer

Transformer loads Unicode text files and performs sequences of transformation operations search-and-replace, or scripting functions) on them. It provides you with an interface to create and test these sequences of transformation operations before running them in batch mode on a set of files. We wrote Transformer to assist in the rescue of textual data from obsolete file formats such as DOS word-processor files, but it has since proved useful in a wide variety of contexts.

  • Mashing Texts (JiTR)

Mashing Texts will prototype a recombinant research environment for document management, large-scale linguistic research, and cultural analysis. Mashing Texts proposes to adapt the document repository model developed for the Text Analysis Portal for Research (TAPoR) project so that a research team interested in recombinant documents can experiment with research methods suited to creating, managing and studying large collections of textual evidence for humanities research. The TAPoR project built text analysis infrastructure suited to analysis of individual texts. Mashing Texts will prototype the other side of the equation – the rapid creation of large-scale collections of evidence. It will do this by connecting available off-the-shelf open-source tools to the TAPoR repository so that the team can experiment with research using large-scale text methods.

Orlando: Women's Writing in the British Isles from the Beginnings to the Present is a highly dynamic textbase. It is a rich resource for researchers, for students, and for readers with an interest in literature, women's writing, or cultural history more generally. With about five and a half million words of text, it is full of interpretive information on women, writing, and culture. It includes documents on the lives and writing careers of about a thousand writers, together with a great deal of contextual historical material on relevant subjects, such as the law, economics, science, writing by men, education, medicine, politics.

The program of research builds on a preliminary review of Canadian municipal bylaw legislation (conducted from June to October 2004 by Tricia Irish), and includes a detailed comparison of existing municipal legislation in Canada, a review of the literature, and an analysis of social impacts, costs, legal implications, aesthetic concerns, and comparison with international jurisdictions. The Dictionary of Words in the Wild is a community collection of images of public textuality, specifically words outside of the usual print contexts. We are interested in words that are:

In an interesting context where the location adds texture
Visually provocative in some way
Part of phrases that add another intersection of meaning
The idea for the Dictionary came from discussions at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities when Geoffrey Rockwell was there in 2001-2, especially discussions around the deformance of textuality and transcoding.

  • Map of Early Modern London

"The Map of Early Modern London" is a hyperlinked atlas of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century London based on the "Agas" woodcut map of the 1560s. Over 200 sites and streets are linked to pages that provide a full historical and archaeological survey, quotations from John Stow's Survey of London, and a bibliography of literary references. Over 200 additional sites and streets are identified.

  • Canadian Century Research Infrastructure

One of the most comprehensive humanities and social science research projects in Canadian history, the Canadian Century Research Infrastructure is a five-year, pan-Canadian initiative to develop a set of interrelated databases centered on census records for the 1911-1951 period. The databases being developed from manuscript census records for the period 1911 to 1951 form the core of a much larger research infrastructure, the objective of which is to construct an evidentiary foundation for research on the transformation of Canadian society from the late 19th century to the later 20th century. To construct this evidentiary foundation, the CCRI will have two major components: primary sources and secondary sources.

  • Canadian Letters and Images Project

The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. It began in August 2000, located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. In November 2003 the Project was very pleased to bring in as partners the History Department at The University of Western Ontario. Students at Western will be working under the guidance of Dr. Jonathan Vance, Canada Research Chair in Conflict and Culture. This partnership between Malaspina and Western will ensure that more material can made available to the public through the Project web site.

  • Local Culture and Diversity on the Prairies

The project aims to document everyday life, ethnic identity and regional variation among people of Ukrainian, French, German, and English heritage on the prairies up to 1939. The key questions for the project are: How did people from diverse backgrounds interact, adapt and "become prairie Canadians" in the first half of this century? What was the relationship between cultural inheritance and local community participation? How did they express their various identities on the local community level? What factors affected any regional variation in such communities as they evolved over time? The project will generate a great deal of documentary information and primary archival resources for further research in many aspects of the Canadian prairie heritage.

The Experimental Reading Workshop is an ongoing, open-ended research and design project collectively led by faculty, students and staff. Many of its members meet bi-weekly to discuss innovations in the analysis, display, and reception of text and graphics through technology. Membership is open, and new members may bring existing projects, or ideas for projects, into the Workshop for comment and support. The ERW was founded in 2003, and currently operates under the umbrella of the Text Analysis Portal for Research.

  • The UVic Image Markup Tool Project

The Image Markup and Presentation tool (IMaP) allows very large images to displayed in a web browser. The images can exceed the size of the browser window; the user can pan the image in any direction to see the hidden areas. The user can zoom in to see greater detail or zoom out for an overview. The image can be marked up with symbols, shapes and labels, which are displayed as overlays on top of the base image. The markup can also link to extensive annotations, which can be displayed when the user clicks on an image feature. Feature annotations are stored in a database, which can be searched.

  • Wenzhou Spoken Corpus

The Wenzhou Spoken Corpus (WSC) has been developed by Jingxia Lin and John Newman in the Department of Linguistics, University of Alberta, with technical support from the Text Analysis for Research Portal (TAPoR) team. WSC is an online, searchable corpus of transcribed spoken Wenzhou data, consisting of six sub-corpora: Face to Face Conversation, Phonecall, Wenzhou News Commentary, Internet Chat, Interview and Wenzhou Songs.

  • Public Knowledge Project (OJS, OCS)

The Public Knowledge Project is a research and development initiative directed toward improving the scholarly and public quality of academic research through the development of innovative online publishing and knowledge-sharing environments. Begun in 1998 by Professor John Willinsky in the Faculty of Education at UBC, PKP has developed Open Journal Systems and Open Conference Systems, free software for the management, publishing, and indexing of journals and conferences, as well as Open Archives Harvester and Lemon8-XML to facilitate the indexing of research and scholarship. This open source software is being used around the world to increase access to knowledge and improve its scholarly management, while considerably reducing publishing costs. Canadian researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities require two research communication services that can be provided within one structure. The first is an accessible online Canadian research record. The second is access to an online publication service that will place their work on record and will ensure widespread and flexible access. Synergies provides both these functions. Built on the foundation of Érudit, a Quebec-based research publication service provider in existence since 1998, Open Journal Systems (OJS), which is a tested online journal publishing software suite, and the technical expertise developed by its three other partners, Synergies will integrate work being done within its five-party consortium to create a decentralized national platform for Social Sciences and Humanities research communication.

  • Day in the Life of the Digital Humanities

A Day in the Life of the Digital Humanities (ADLDH) is a community publication project that will bring together digital humanists from around the world to document what they do on one day, March 18th. The goal of the project is to create a web site that weaves together the journals of the participants into a picture that answers the question, “Just what do computing humanists really do?” Participants will document their day through photographs and commentary in a blog-like journal. The collection of these journals with links, tags, and comments will make up the final work which will be published online.

Implementing New Knowledge Environments (INKE)

The INKE group is comprised of researchers and stakeholders at the forefront of computing in the humanities, text analysis, information studies, usability and interface design. The network is led by Canadian scholars, but includes members from the USA and the UK. It is comprised of those who are best-poised to understand the nature of the human record as it intersects with the computer. Our work is divided into four key research groupings: textual studies, user experience, interface design, and information management.

The Editing Modernism in Canada Project (EMiC) includes 32 participants, with representatives from regions across Canada and from France, England, and the United States.
