Ferguson, and Katharine F. Pantzer. 3 vols. London: Bibliographical Society, 1976-1991. [A listing of every book in the English language published between 1475 (the coming of the printing press to England) and 1640 of which copies are extant (books known only by second-hand references to them--as in wills or other documents--are not included). It is a "short-title catalogue" in the sense that this list uses short forms of titles, not complete transcriptions of the sometimes very lengthy text of title pages. Each entry is given a unique number, allowing reference to a book simply by its "STC" number: STC 17023, for instance, is Caxton's first edition of John Lydgate's Life of Our Lady, published 1483 (Caxton's second edition, also published in 1483, is STC 17024). Each entry includes a list of up to 10 locations, being libraries where copies of the book are preserved. A new project to catalogue the Bodleian's fifteenth-century books began in 1992 and is ongoing (see "Jensen, Kristian"); it is somewhat unusual in that the catalogue is to include a full account of the contents of each volume, so it will be much more than a short title catalogue.] [* Subject heading: early printed books (catalogues); incunabula *]
