The results of the project will be communicated through:
  • A major international and interdisciplinary conference to be held at the Telus Centre, http://www.extension.ualberta.ca/units/teluscentre/index_flash.htm, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, on 1-3 April 2004. [see the virtual tours on the link "inside the TELUS Centre". The conference, addressing the theme "The Impact of War on Children," will attract senior and junior academics and practitioners in government and individuals in IGOs and NGOs
  • An edited volume on the above theme, based on presentations made at the Edmonton conference, hopefully to be published by the UNU Press or the University of Alberta Press;
  • A CD database, created by university students, that tracks and updates the global dimension of the problem, i.e. the countries where war-affected children reside, the aggregate number of these children, the gender balance, the legal measures taken to protect children, various attempts at rehabilitation and reintegration, etc.
  • A series of research papers presented at major international conferences (e.g. the ISA, ACUNS, BISA, APSA, the Learneds, etc). Some of these papers will be published in quality refereed journals;
  • A state-of-the-art website, with a comprehensive list of weblinks to academic institution, organizations, governments and NGOs involved in this issue area, as well as to documents, UN resolutions and reports on the issue.
  • Pithy opinion articles and guest columns in major newspapers and popular magazines that will raise the level of consciousness about this problem and its potential solutions
  • A policy brief at the culmination of the project - intended for government policy makers, funding agencies, NGOs, and IGOs - prepared by the principle investigator and research collaborators.
There is the possibility that a documentary film will be made that highlights various phases of the project. The current working title is "The Plight of War-Affected Children." We are still at the very early stages of negotiating with the film company.
