Ukrainian Folklore Sound Recordings

Ukraine Women Picture There are well over 1000 Ukrainian churches in the Prairie Provinces of Canada.

With the movement of rural population to the cities many of these churches are in disrepair and are closing. The Sanctuary Project at the University of Alberta is attempting to document all these churches. Professors Himka, Kononenko, and Swyripa are the principal investigators and Natalie Kononenko has been interviewing the clergy and parishioners of the churches. These initial interviews were conducted in Peace Country, Alberta in 2010 and Saskatchewan in 2011. They were indexed by Danielle Klassen.

Below is a list of major categories discussed in the interviews. Click on one. The next page shows sub-categories under that major category. Click on one. Repeat through the various sub-categories.

When you click on SOUND FILE you will go to a page with one or more mp3 listed. Click on one of these and you will go to the notes from the interview.

At the bottom of the page will be a time, or several times, click on one and hear the interview from that time point. You can hear other parts of the interview by moving the SLIDER under the player.
